Getting Started

Your first hour on From the Ashes: create a character, find your guide, choose what to touch first, and avoid the handful of traps that catch new players.

Status: LIVE — the starter flow, rates, and quality-of-life commands on this page are available now.

At a glance

  • You start at level 1 with 100 copper, standard class gear, class-appropriate food and water, and 50 Beginner’s Gliders (981316).
  • Your first 50 gliders are free and character-bound to the new-character grant. Existing characters do not receive them retroactively.
  • Base XP is 1x. Reputation is 2x. You can raise personal XP later with .xp set <rate> up to 5x.
  • The level cap is 80, but content is also gated by Individual Progression. See 08 — Individual progression.
  • Every starting zone has an adventure guide who can send you to another friendly starter zone.
  • A level-60 Outland boost exists, is usable once per character, and is blocked while an Oath is active.
  • The Random Dungeon Finder only covers Classic and The Burning Crusade. Most grouping is manual or with NPCBots.

How to use this page

  1. Create the character you actually want to play. Custom races and all ten Wrath classes are available. See 14 — Customization for the race list and 02 — Starting experience for where each race begins.
  2. Log in and look around. Your class trainer, quest givers, and an adventure guide are close by. Put your hearthstone somewhere useful before you leave.
  3. Talk to your adventure guide. The guide is the friendly NPC in the starter outfit. You can ask for travel to another starter zone, but only to a zone your faction can use. See the guide table in 02 — Starting experience.
  4. Do the first few quests. They teach the route, give your first gear, and unlock your class trainer’s early abilities. Class changes mean you get several signature abilities much earlier than 3.3.5a normally allows.
  5. Open your account systems. /rbank shows the account-wide reagent bank. /pals claims a Pocket Pals starter. /transmog opens the appearance UI. /reforge only becomes useful once you have gear with secondary stats.
  6. Decide whether to take an Oath. You can enroll at level 1, 60, or 70. Oaths are optional and restrictive. Read 10 — Oaths before accepting one.
  7. Plan your boost before your Oath. If you want the one-time level-60 boost, use it before an Oath is active. An active challenge blocks the boost and blocks using that character as an altbot.
  8. At level 30, buy riding. Apprentice riding costs 100 gold. The full mount table is in 17 — Travel and quality of life.

Tips

  • Do not spend your first 50 gliders casually. They are a finite convenience. Reusable and crafted glider variants exist, but they are a later engineering project. See 17 — Travel and quality of life.
  • Keep one bag for quest items and one for reagents. Auto-deposit is convenient, but some quests want materials in your bags.
  • Train even if you think you will not use the spell. Early class changes make normally late abilities available much sooner.
  • Check the reagent bank before buying from the Auction House. Account-wide storage means an alt may already have the material.
  • Do not enroll in an Oath just for the reward. Every campaign has a real restriction. Slow and Steady, for example, locks you to 1x XP and reduces the final award.
  • Use the guide only when you want a change of scenery. Starter-zone travel requires a fresh conversation, being within 8 yards, and being out of combat.
  • If you want the level-60 boost, take it before level 60 and before an Oath. It is one per character and is blocked while a challenge is active.
  • Try the Auction House early. It is stocked with leveling supplies and trade goods, so you are not dependent on other players listing them.

Limits and configuration

  • Level cap: 80.
  • Base XP: 1x. Individual XP range: 1–5x. Reputation: 2x.
  • Boost: one per character, target level 60, requires being below the target level, and blocked by an active Oath.
  • Starter gliders: 50 per new character. Existing characters do not get the grant.
  • Random Dungeon Finder: Classic and The Burning Crusade only. Wrath dungeons are manual or NPCBot groups.
  • Daily dungeon rewards: disabled. Do not queue expecting a daily bag.
  • Portable transmog: not available. Use the appearance UI and a transmogrifier.
  • Quartermaster Ledger: disabled. Use a normal quartermaster.
  • .ah and .repair: disabled. Use the Auction House and a repair vendor.

Admin note

Starter grants, base rates, and the class spell grant are runtime settings, not quest scripts. The relevant live switches are in Server/runtime/configs/worldserver.conf and the per-module configs: PlayerStart.CustomSpells=1, Rate.XP.Kill/Rate.XP.Quest at the realm default, Rate.Reputation.*=2, MaxPlayerLevel=80, and the starting-pet and starter-glider module configs. The eight boost NPCs use the Outland boost module and share its per-character claim rules. If a new character does not receive gliders or food/water, check the starter grant module before changing core rates.
